Avantium Starts Unloading of High Fructose Syrup at FDCA Flagship Plant
AMSTERDAM, 17 February 2025 – Avantium N.V., a leading company in renewable and circular polymer materials, announced today a milestone at its FDCA Flagship Plant. The Company has successfully loaded the first volumes of High Fructose Syrup (HFS) provided by its feedstock partner Tereos into the storage tanks at the manufacturing site in Delfzijl (The Netherlands) in anticipation of the start-up of the FDCA Flagship Plant. The loading of HFS is an important step of the start-up of the FDCA Flagship Plant, the commercial production of FDCA and the market launch of the plant-based and circular polymer PEF (polyethylene furanoate), branded as releaf®.
In addition to the unloading of HFS at its FDCA Flagship Plant, Avantium has placed the first order for the supply of biobased MEG, which will be utilized by its tolling partner Selenis in Portugal. The introduction of these two raw materials into the process represent the next steps in Avantium's journey towards the successful production of FDCA and releaf®.
The next steps of the start-up process involve initiating the start-up of the various sub-units of the FDCA Flagship Plant. Upon successful start-up of all the units of the FDCA Flagship Plant, Avantium will begin producing FDCA in batches before shifting to continuous operations. Tolling partner Selenis will polymerize the FDCA, together with biobased MEG, into PEF. After conducting performance tests of the produced PEF and securing the related regulatory approvals, sales under the offtake agreements are anticipated to commence in 2025.
About Avantium
Avantium is a pioneering commercial-stage company focused on renewable & circular polymer materials. Avantium develops and commercialises innovative technologies for the production of materials based on sustainable carbon feedstocks, i.e. carbon from biomass or carbon from the air (CO2). The most advanced technology is the YXY® Technology that catalytically converts plant-based sugars into FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), the key building block for the sustainable plastic PEF (polyethylene furanoate). PEF is known under the brand name Releaf®, an EU registered trademark of Avantium. Avantium has successfully demonstrated the YXY® Technology at its pilot plant in Geleen, the Netherlands, and is in the process of starting the world's first commercial plant for FDCA in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Avantium works in partnership with like-minded companies around the globe to create revolutionary renewable chemistry solutions from invention to commercial scale.
Avantium’s shares are listed on Euronext Amsterdam and Euronext Brussels (symbol: AVTX). Avantium is incorporated in the Euronext Amsterdam SmallCap Index (AScX). Its offices and headquarters are in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
