Its main goals are to reduce the environmental impact of packaging, promote circularity, and harmonize packaging regulations across the EU. The PPWR positions biobased plastics, such as Avantium’s PEF (branded as releaf®) as a crucial component in achieving the EU's circular economy and climate neutrality objectives. The PPWR, approved on 16 December 2024 by the European Council, is set to come into force in January 2025 and marks a significant step towards a sustainable and circular plastics economy.

The Dutch government has already recognized the importance of biobased plastics in the circular plastics norm. However, this inclusion was not previously reflected in the PPWR. Avantium is pleased that the European Union now officially acknowledge the critical role that biobased plastics play in transitioning to a low-carbon, circular plastics economy. Under the new regulation, the European Commission will introduce several key measures within three years of its implementation. It will establish criteria for the use of biobased feedstocks in plastic packaging, set ambitious targets to increase the use of biobased feedstocks in plastic packaging, and use biobased plastic when suitable recycling technologies for food-contact packaging are not available.

Avantium believes that its biobased and recyclable polymer PEF (polyethylene furanaote), known as releaf®, can play an important role in achieving these targets. Releaf® is 100% biobased, substantially reducing reliance on fossil-based resources and significantly lowering CO2 emissions. Releaf® is furthermore recyclable and can be recycled in existing recycling assets. Moreover, releaf® has superior barrier properties for gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen, which extend the shelf life of packaged products. Its high mechanical strength allows for thinner packaging, reducing material usage and waste. These performance benefits make releaf® an ideal choice for a wide range of packaging applications.

Marco Jansen, Avantium’s Chief Commercial & Public Affairs Officer, comments: "We welcome the EU's progressive stance on biobased plastics. Avantium looks forward to collaborating with industry partners, policymakers, and stakeholders to achieve these targets and drive innovation in biobased plastics. Together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient future for the plastics industry.”

About Avantium

Avantium is a pioneering commercial-stage company focused on renewable & circular polymer materials. In her PhD research for the Chemistry and Psychology departments of the University of Amsterdam, environmental psychologist Maria Zwicker found that consumers consistently have a positive attitude towards bottles made from the biobased plastic PEF. Consumers clearly indicate that they would prefer the PEF bottle over a bottle made from conventional, fossil-based plastics and are willing to pay up to 40% more. The study has recently been published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications. The group presents a simple, yet innovative, synthesis strategy to overcome the inherently low reactivity of plant-based secondary diols in polyester synthesis, resulting in polyesters that have superior mechanical and thermal properties, and at the same time high molecular weights. This enables the production of new very strong and durable plant-based plastics from building blocks such as Avantium’s FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), thereby further increasing its addressable market.

In collaboration with Avantium and LEGO, the University of Amsterdam research group found a way to incorporate substantial amounts of rigid bio-based diols such as glucose-derived isosorbide (to arrive at a strong and durable material) while making sufficiently long polymer chains (to achieve a certain ductility). This makes it possible to produce very strong sustainable plastics from chemical building blocks (monomers), such as FDCA to make PEIF – (poly(ethylene-co-isosorbide furanoate) or terephthalic acid to make PEIT – (poly(ethylene-co-isosorbide terephthalate). These new plastics also have superior heat resistance compared to conventional plastics, which is relevant for refill or re-use as washing of bottles takes place at 85°C. The isosorbide-based polymers furthermore show promising barrier and mechanical properties that can outperform common fossil-based materials such as ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and Tritan. For more than 15 years, Avantium has been working on plant-based polyesters. Its lead product is PEF (polyethylene furanoate) and Avantium is currently constructing the world’s first commercial facility for the manufacture of FDCA, the key building block for PEF. In its laboratories, Avantium is continuously looking for further improvements or variances of PEF. The new polymer PEIF is complementary to PEF and as such increases the potential market for FDCA, as PEIF serves as an equivalent to ABS and Tritan. In collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, Avantium currently has eight PhD students and Post Docs working in its laboratories conducting this kind of research with Avantium. The research described in the Nature Communications paper was carried out within the RIBIPOL project funded by the Dutch Research Council NWO. Avantium supported the project by hosting the PhD students of the research group in its laboratories. First author of the paper is PhD student Daniel Weinland, who defended his PhD thesis on 27 October 2022 and now works for Avantium. Avantium acquired the resulting intellectual assets from the University. Moreover, LEGO supported the project as part of the search for non-fossil alternative plastic materials.

Paper details

Daniel H.
<pp:caseid>651137</pp:caseid>

As part of the OCEAN project*, Avantium has sent its first mobile, container-sized CO2 conversion unit using Avantium’s Volta Technology, to RWE’s powerplant facilities, located in Niederaußem, Germany.

This pre-pilot container is an ideal way to test Avantium’s Volta Technology in real-world applications and to demonstrate the value of our CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilisation) systems. The Volta demonstration unit was initially installed and validated at the Avantium headquarters in Amsterdam and will now be tested under industrial conditions at the site of RWE. The unit will remain at RWE, where all relevant infrastructure for experiments on semi-pilot scale is already present, till the end of June 2022.

During this 6-months period, Avantium targets to convert 250g/hour of CO2 coming directly from a capture facility located at the powerplant itself, into formate. This will in turn serve as a building block for high value products, such as plastics.

“This is an important milestone for Avantium, as this unit is a substantial scale-up from our in-lab units and an important step in our journey to the commercialisation of this technology” comments Arnaud Mol, Engineer, Volta Technology. “This will allow us to validate the potential of bringing the technology directly to customers looking to responsibly manage their CO2 waste on-site and fit these practices into their production process seamlessly.”

Avantium’s Volta team will work in close collaboration with RWE over the next weeks to get the unit set up and equip the local RWE team with the knowledge to run the unit independently.

*The OCEAN project (Oxalic acid from CO2 using Electrochemistry At demonstratioN scale) is using carbon dioxide to produce oxalic acid, which is the basis for various high-quality chemical products. High-profile international partners from industry and science are collaborating to synthesise the target products.

news
